SUFFOLK Thirty years ago, a Suffolk mayor traveled to the Deep South to defend his city's peanut honor. During a visit timed around peanut festival season, Mayor Andrew Damiani rode down Main Street in Dothan, Ala., with a banner proclaiming that Suffolk was the peanut capital of the world, in a town that claimed the same. Dothan's mayor was unswayed. Damiani said he'd let his companion, Mr. Peanut, make the call. By the end, it was a draw. According to "Images of America: The Suffolk Peanut Festival," Dothan signed a proclamation to Suffolk suggesting that - in the name of the peanut - the cities "forever be good friends.
